Renovating your home can be exciting, but it also requires making a tremendous number of decisions—often before you can truly visualize what the finished space will look like.
Will the new kitchen island feel too large?
Is there enough room for the furniture you love?
Would moving a doorway improve the layout?
Will the cabinetry feel balanced?
What will the room actually look like when all of the architectural details, finishes and furnishings come together?
For many homeowners, looking at a traditional two-dimensional floor plan simply isn't enough to answer those questions.
That's why 3D visualization has become such an important part of my design process at Barbara Rose Designs.
Using Chief Architect software, I can take an existing space, explore new floor plan possibilities and then transform those plans into three-dimensional views that help my clients better understand what we're creating—before construction begins.
The design process begins with documenting the existing space.
Before I can redesign a space, I first need to understand exactly what we have.
I begin by measuring and documenting the existing conditions and creating a floor plan of the current space. Walls, windows, doors and other important architectural elements are represented so that we have an accurate starting point.
This gives us something extremely valuable:
A clear picture of what exists today.
From there, we can begin exploring what the space could become.
One of the greatest benefits of designing digitally is the ability to explore different possibilities before committing to one solution.
There is rarely only one way to design a room.
For a kitchen renovation, for example, we might explore different island sizes, appliance locations, cabinetry configurations or seating arrangements.
In a primary suite, we might evaluate whether space should be reallocated between the bedroom, bathroom and closet.
For a living room, we can test different furniture arrangements to determine which creates the best traffic flow and conversation areas.
Seeing these options drawn to scale allows us to compare them objectively.
Instead of asking, “Do you think this will fit?”
We can actually see whether it fits.
Once we've developed a promising layout, Chief Architect allows me to take the design from a two-dimensional plan into a three-dimensional environment.
This is often the moment when everything clicks for a client.
Suddenly, you're no longer trying to interpret lines on a drawing.
You can begin to understand the volume of the room, the relationship between spaces, the height of cabinetry, the placement of windows and doors, and the scale of the furniture.
We can look at the room from different viewpoints and begin to experience the design in a much more intuitive way.

Some of the most important questions during a renovation begin with two words:
What if?
What if we made the island larger?
What if we moved the refrigerator?
What if we widened this doorway?
What if we changed the fireplace?
What if we added built-ins?
What if we moved the bed to another wall?
What if we opened the staircase?
What if we changed the ceiling detail?
Digital design gives us an opportunity to explore those questions before making permanent changes to your home.
That doesn't mean we need to visualize every possible idea. Part of my role as your designer is narrowing the possibilities and guiding you toward solutions that make sense.
But when there are two strong options, seeing them can make the decision much easier.
One of the most common challenges in interior design is understanding scale.
Measurements alone don't always tell the whole story.
A 10-foot kitchen island may technically fit on a floor plan, for example, but seeing it in 3D may reveal that it feels too dominant in the room.
A large sectional may fit within the dimensions of a living room but visually overwhelm the space.
A chandelier may have the correct diameter according to a formula but still feel wrong in relation to the ceiling height, table and surrounding architecture.
3D visualization gives us another way to evaluate those relationships.
One of the reasons I like using 3D design during renovations and new construction is that it allows us to think about architecture and interiors together.
A window isn't simply a window.
Its location may affect where your bed can go.
A doorway may determine whether there's enough room for a console or built-in.
The width of a wall may affect the television and furniture arrangement.
A ceiling detail may influence lighting placement.
The location of an island affects seating, pendants, circulation and cabinetry.
When these elements are considered together early in the design process, we have a better opportunity to create a home that feels intentional rather than pieced together.
One of my favorite things about 3D visualization is that it gives us an opportunity to identify potential concerns while we're still designing.
Changing a wall, cabinet or window on my computer is very different from changing it after construction has begun.
Once materials have been ordered, framing has been completed, plumbing has been installed or cabinetry has gone into production, changes can become much more complicated—and potentially much more expensive.
The goal of 3D design isn't to eliminate every unexpected issue that can arise during construction.
The goal is to make as many thoughtful decisions as possible before we reach that point.
Renovation decisions can involve significant investments.
It can be difficult to approve a kitchen, bathroom, built-in, fireplace or furniture layout when you're still trying to imagine it in your head.
Being able to see the proposed design can give clients greater confidence in the direction we're taking.
And sometimes the rendering tells us something isn't right.
That's valuable too.
I'd much rather have a client look at a design on the screen and say, “I don't think I love that,” than have that realization after it's installed.
Design is a process, and visualization gives us another opportunity to refine that process.
One of the most rewarding parts of using 3D visualization is comparing the original rendering with the completed room.
A successful rendering isn't about creating an unrealistic fantasy image.
It's about communicating the design intent clearly enough that the homeowner, designer and other professionals involved in the project share an understanding of where we're headed.
When the project is completed, it's incredibly satisfying to put the original rendering next to the finished photograph and see how the ideas we developed digitally became a real space.

I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions about interior design renderings.
They're certainly exciting to look at, but for me, their real value is in the decisions they help us make.
They allow us to:
Understand the space before it's built
Compare different layouts
Evaluate furniture and cabinetry scale
Study window and door placement
Explore architectural details
Consider lighting in relation to the design
Communicate ideas more clearly
Identify potential problems earlier
Refine the design before construction
Move forward with greater confidence
The rendering is the visual result.
The real value is the thinking and planning that happens behind it.
